A Guide to the Worst Ingredients in Dry Shampoo

ESTIMATE 8-MINUTES READ

We are the first ones to admit that dry shampoo is a complete lifesaver. Rarely will you meet a babe who hasn’t reached for this miracle product when they were in a pinch and needed to look and feel fab. Plus, who really wants to wash and blow-dry their hair multiple times a week? Not us, honey! However, in all its glory, dry shampoo can have a downside. In fact, there are some not-so-great ingredients in this beauty cabinet essential. And while we hate to be the bearers of bad news, we feel it’s our duty to hook you up with this Guide to the Worst Ingredients in Dry Shampoo, while offering you a better more natural alternative.

Talc… The bad ingredient you don’t want in your makeup, or your hair.

If you’ve been reading our blogs for a while now, you’ve for sure heard us rant about how bad talc is in any of your beauty products.

Talc is a toxic ingredient that can pose serious risks to your health. This is notably due to the asbestos fibers that can sometimes be found in it. The properties that are found in asbestos are linked to respiratory issues and cancer.

So as tempting as it is to reach for a bottle of dry shampoo when we're feeling lazy, we can’t say it is in any way worth it. Needless to say, we’ll skip out on talc whenever we can! And that not only goes for our dry shampoo habits, but our overall beauty tendencies too.

Look no further than common makeup products for more of this toxic ingredient. What talc does is that it acts as a filler in a lot of beauty products, and often gives powder and shadows that silky soft finish we look for. However, it is not healthy. And as your BFF in all things natural, we must protect you from it!

Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane… Say that 10 times fast.

What on earth is octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane you ask? Well, think of it as basically a very long word that describes a silicone based property that (you guessed it) is found in your conventional dry shampoo.

The reason why you don’t want any of this on your head is that, with repeated use, this toxic ingredient will dry out your scalp. What’s more, it will make your strands brittle and the complete opposite of luscious. Oh, and did we mention the build-up this stuff causes on your hair after a while? Ok ok, you get the point.

Don’t get us wrong. The above horror story will not happen to you after one use. But the truth is, many of us know how addictive it can be to reach for dry shampoo on a *very* regular basis. We totally get how great that added volume is on days where your mane is looking limp. But in the long run – your hair won’t be voluminous at all.

So steer clear of this one, babe. It’s one of the most damaging in our Guide to the Worst Ingredients in Dry Shampoo. In fact, just avoid non-natural dry shampoos in general – got it? Good.

Another one of the very worst ingredients in dry shampoo: Cetrimonium Chloride.

As nasty as this ingredient sounds… it is. Did that make sense? We hope you caught our drift. If not, we’ll explain ourselves as we always do. Check this out.

Cetrimonium chloride is not only toxic, it’s allergenic and a total irritant for your skin. The reason dry shampoo companies add it to their products is because it works wonders for reducing static – but at what expense? We don’t think any hairstyle warrants risking your health with toxic ingredients, babe.

Like most of the culprits in this Guide to the Worst Ingredients in Dry Shampoo, cetrimonium chloride can really damage and dry out your scalp after repeated use. And honestly, there is no need to be stressed about hair static at all! A good natural hair oil can totally take care of all of that, without hurting that pretty little head of yours.

The toxic ingredient you don’t want anywhere near your scalp: Aluminum.

People often talk about the use of aluminum in toxic deodorants. Just like it is used for these underarm products, the whole point of aluminum in beauty items is to soak up excess oil. But as many of us already know, this stuff is terrible once it gets into your bloodstream. We’ll tell you why.

Aluminum is linked to causing cancer. Moreover, it is even associated with kidney disease. Essentially, too much exposure to heavy metals can make you way sick. We’re talking headaches, abdominal pain, and organ failure. What’s more, people affected by heightened aluminum exposure have even reported fertility issues. Not cool.

Ok, we’re super ready to lighten this blog up. But unfortunately, we are not done yet. We need to keep calling out the toxic bad guys in dry shampoo! And you thought your ex was the worst? Just kidding, he is.

Alcohol… & not the kind you put in your margarita.

We know what you’re thinking. Finally, an ingredient that doesn’t *seem* as detrimental as that 30-letter one above. Unfortunately though, putting alcohol on your scalp on the regular is just not as acceptable as that occasional cocktail you enjoy.

Using toxic alcohol based dry shampoo will *again* dry out your scalp over time, and can even cause dandruff, and breakouts. Who wants a breakout on their scalp of all places?! Not us, and not you beautiful.

Keep in mind that your hair growth starts at your scalp. So any of these drying ingredients that affect the actual skin on your head, will inevitably disturb how healthy your locks are and how long they’re able to grow.

We should also mention that if you’re prone to eczema or rosacea outbreaks, using a product that contains alcohol will only make your flare-ups worse. And you? You don’t deserve any of that!

Phenoxyethanol… & not the kind you find in your antioxidant-filled tea.

Most things are better off left as nature made them, right? Phenoxyethanol, is one of those things. Kind of like banana. Fake banana flavor is so not the move. Sorry, we had to get that off our chests.

This chemically altered version of the glorious stuff found in green tea, is not it. It’s meant to fight bacteria, but the truth is that if you ingest this fake stuff… uh, well, it’s not pretty. Phenoxyethanol is linked to causing severe skin issues such as hives, rashes, and serious dry skin conditions such as eczema.

Moreover, you should know that many skin types are irritated by chemically made phenoxyethanol. Did we mention it can also cause blistering? Yup, no thanks.

Liquid Petroleum Gas (a.k.a. LPG’s)… Yep you read that right.

Don’t sweat it. We weren't sure what to think of this toxic ingredient either. Gas? Sorry, what? They’re putting gas in our dry shampoo?! Someone alert the beauty authorities!

Ok, get this. The next disappointment in our Guide to the Worst Ingredients in Dry Shampoo is called Liquid Petroleum Gas, or LPG. This is the toxic junk they load up your dry shampoo with for it to come spraying out of that aerosol bottle like a bat out of hell. In reality though, LPG’s can cause nausea, headaches, and some bad breathing issues. Not to mention, that crazy spray pressure could seriously take one of your eyes out. We're not kidding.

For real. And for those who even remotely suffer from asthma, or have stomach sensitivities? You need to stay away from this stuff! And if you don’t have those kinds of issues? Rest assured that with long-term use of this toxic ingredient, you will develop them.

Never fear: You don’t have to live without dry shampoo.

We wouldn't expect you to give up the convenience of a quick and easy to use product in your every day hair life. We do however, expect you to ditch your toxic (ex) dry shampoo.

That's because BBE went and created a natural alternative to the not so cute usual guy that you're used to. Which means you can totally go on with your life, dry shampoo in hand and worry-free. Especially on those days when your boss schedules an 8:00 a.m. Zoom call, and wearing a cute ball cap won’t cut it. Don't you hate when that happens? Life is so unfair sometimes.

BBE’s natural dry shampoo is in a league of its own. If you want to talk about organic ingredients, free of any of those scary ones above – this product is your jam. This must-have beauty product is formulated with only a handful of natural ingredients.

Trust us when we tell you that this dry shampoo gets the job done without compromising your hair health. In fact, the organic lavender oil in this baby will actually calm your scalp, and help to nourish it.

But how does it get your hair clean? Well, believe it or not – corn starch is the magic ingredient in this natural gem. This helps absorb oil in your hair, along with the help of baking soda and kaolin clay, which both help to remove dirt in a non-irritating way.

What’s more, we’ve went and made this favorite for both light and dark hair so that you can say goodbye to that annoying white cast most dry shampoos leave. Seriously, so not cute.

Ready to make the switch to a natural dry shampoo?

You’ve gotten this far in this blog, so we know that you're ready babe! I mean really, who wants to be pouring LPG’s onto their scalp? Sounds a little dangerous if you ask us.

On top of that, we are sure that reading all of this has you in the mood to show your locks some extra love ASAP, so we’ve got you covered with this blog on natural ways to keep your hair shiny and healthy, right here.

Let us know how you liked this Guide to the Worst Ingredients in Dry Shampoo, and how much you love stretching the life of that blowout, the natural way.

Cheers to clean hair (even on days when having time for a shower seems like a luxury),

Carey. <3
