Ladies and gents, let's talk about something we all love: a good ol' self tan. You know, that glorious golden glow we all crave without the fear of skin cancer. But, there's one question that always pops up when it comes to self tanner - how long does it actually last?
Self tanner is a great way to achieve a bronzed glow without the risks of sun damage. However, one of the most common questions people have when it comes to self-tanner is how long it lasts. The lifespan of your self-tan depends on a variety of factors, including the type of product you use, your skin type, and how you care for your skin after applying the tanner.
Most self tanners contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient, which reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin to create a tan. Think an apple cut in half, gently browning on the counter. It's a similar reaction. To get the most out of your self tanner, it's important to apply it evenly and avoid bathing or hot water for at least 8 hours after application.

Exfoliating your skin regularly can also help to remove dead skin cells, which can make your tan fade faster. To maintain a long-lasting, even tan, it's also important to keep your skin moisturized daily, especially if you have dry skin.
To add extra hydration, you can use oil-based moisturizers (like our fave Glowing and Radiant Organic Facial Oil) which will help to keep the skin hydrated and smooth, to create a perfect canvas for self-tanning. Aloe vera is also great for moisturizing and healing damaged skin.
When it comes to tanning tips, you should avoid showering or bathing for at least 8 hours after applying self tanner to allow the DHA time to fully develop and also avoid hot tubs or hot baths as they will fade the tan faster.
People with dark or olive skin may find that self-tanning products give them a darker tan, but it's important to keep in mind that the natural oils in oily skin can break down the tanning agents more quickly. To prolong the life of your self tan, avoid activities that can cause excessive sweating, such as hot yoga or intense exercise.
In general, a self tan will last anywhere from 4 to 6 days, but with proper care and maintenance, you can help extend the life of your tan and enjoy your golden glow for even longer. Remember to exfoliate, moisturize, and avoid hot water to get the best tanning results and maintain a natural looking tan. Happy tanning!
