How to Effectively Exfoliate at Home

ESTIMATE 3-MINUTES READ

Learn how to exfoliate your face and body right from the comfort of your own home.

The alarm sounds off in all its heinous glory—and, despite the comforts of your bed, you begrudgingly drag yourself to the shower to kick off the work day. You lather, rinse, clean & sing until you feel confident enough to finally hop out. Despite the effort, however, you're left feeling more reptilian than rejuvenated. (We're talking Skeksis level, y'all) Why is this? Well, all too often people skip an integral step—exfoliation. But you need not worry, we're here to teach you how to exfoliate, effectively. What sounds like some exclusive spa treatment can actually be done from the comfort of your home, and quite easily too.

So what exactly is exfoliation, and why is it necessary?

Exfoliation Defined

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of skin. Like many other bodily processes, the skin has its own life cycle. In particular, the outer layer—or epidermis—goes through constant renewal. Once the cells die, carefully removing them encourages cell turnover, unclogs pores, evens skin tone, and more. (Granted, you might be cringing at the idea of all that dead skin, but getting it off the bod is actually a really good thing!)

How To - Face Exfoliation:

Facial skin is thinner and more delicate when compared to the rest of the body, so it's important to use a careful technique to get the most out of a scrub—without causing unnecessary irritation or damage.

1. Start by cleansing the face.

For greater exfoliation, use a konjac sponge. These babies are extremely effective in shedding those cells. Wet the sponge considerably until soft, add your cleanser, then gently massage the sponge across your face in circular motions.

2. Next, you may use a facial scrub to get even better results.

Beauty by Earth's scrub contains super fruits and chlorophyl, giving your skin nutrients as you rid it of all that built-up gunk. Apply a dime-sized amount to your fingertips, then lightly spread the scrub across your face.

3. Rinse your face, then apply your favorite moisturizer as needed.

How To - Body Exfoliation

Your body has a LOT of surface area to attend to, but it doesn't take too long to cover once you get the feel for it. There are 2 routes for body exfoliation—wet or dry. Lucky for you, we'll be covering both!

Exfoliating Wet Skin

  1. After getting the skin sufficiently wet, run a body Konjac sponge under the water—ensuring that it's soft and properly saturated.
  2. Following this, grab your favorite body wash, adding a small amount to the sponge. (We recommend Beauty by Earth's Peppermint Tea Tree Body Wash to effectively fight off bacteria and cleanse the skin).
  3. Gently rub the sponge across your body in small, circular motions to exfoliate.
  4. It can be difficult to reach certain places with the Konjac sponge, but that doesn't mean you should skip over them! Use a tool such as our Shower Back Scrubber to tackle all the nooks and crannies. Simply position the scrubber and use back-and-forth motions to exfoliate.
  5. Rinse and towel off, applying a body butter or cream to finish.

Exfoliating Dry Skin

Exfoliation is just one of the many benefits of dry brushing. Using a dry brush pre-shower will help the removal of dead skin cells that may be lingering.

  1. With either Beauty by Earth's Long Handle Body Brush or Dry Brush With Cellulite Massager, start at the feet, brush bristles towards the skin. Brush upwards using smooth, long strokes. It's recommend that you make 12 passes on each part of skin.
  2. Move on to the legs and arms, always making sure to move towards the center of the body.
  3. For the back, stomach, and armpits use circular motions.
  4. Finish off by taking a shower or applying a moisturizer.
