Eco-Friendly Halloween Ideas

October 26 /2021

Comments

Halloween is almost here witches! And although we have been pretty occupied between re-watching our October classics and stocking up on must-have treats (hello, Sour Patch Kids), we decided a break was in order to bring you another Halloween blog. Don’t worry though, we’ll be right back at those shenanigans after we wrap this one up. From glammed-up costumes to candy you’ll want to overindulge in, we’re here to show you all of the ways in which you can spend this holiday *without* having any frightening side effects on the environment. Trust us, babe, you’re going to love these Eco-friendly Halloween Ideas: Costumes, Makeup, Decorations, Candy (oh my!).

Eco-friendly candy is there such a thing?

Babe, yes! We think Halloween is a primo excuse to indulge in your favorite candy. However, so many holiday boxes are *way* overpackaged and in turn, are not so eco-friendly. Not sure what we’re talking about here? Let us explain.

Image of a variety of Halloween candy.

When you purchase a box of miniature candy or chocolate, all of those little guys are individually wrapped up in a ton of plastic (on top of the large box they already come in!). And while we totally understand that this individual wrapping is necessary for the safety of trick-or-treaters, it isn’t always what you should reach for. You can avoid purchasing it when it comes to your personal at-home indulging. Essentially, we think you should candy it up babe! However, do so with a regular bag that might not be Halloween-themed or packaged.

If you really want to go the extra mile, you can also opt for candy and chocolate brands that stand behind an eco-friendly ethos. Fair-trade chocolate brands like Alter Eco are a great choice for satisfying that sweet tooth, guilt-free. Oh and, they make the perfect accompaniment to watching the parade of costumed kiddos out on October 31st.

This Halloween, embrace an eco-friendly makeup look.

There are so many ways in which you can be totally eco-friendly with your glam this Halloween. Whether it is supporting a cruelty-free and recyclable cosmetic brand or simply using makeup you already have to create that spooky look, you can make small choices that ultimately have a big impact on the environment.

If you can, try creating your Halloween look with the makeup you already have. We all have that lipstick we never dare to wear all year long hanging out at the bottom of our cosmetic bag. Or, that glittery eyeshadow we never seem to be game enough to wear IRL! Now is the time to bust these products out and to put them to good use! You’ll avoid going out and spending money on one-time makeup items and create less waste by doing so.

Now, if you can’t get away with creating that zombie-fied look with the cosmetics you already have on hand – we get that! If that’s your situation, opt for makeup brands that are cruelty-free and that value the environment by having a recycling program or by giving back. Lucky for you babe, we have a whole blog post on just that, right here.

Now that you’ve got your eco-friendly Halloween makeup on lock (you look fab by the way & don’t forget the remover!), you’re ready for what’s next on our list of eco-friendly Halloween ideas! Wardrobe, of course!

Ready to dress up? Make your costume an eco-friendly one with these easy tips.

Let’s be real. The best part about this scary yet beloved holiday is dressing up. Aside from spending the whole month getting prepped for the spooky night of October 31st, of course. Whether it’s for yourself or your kids, hear us out on this next one on our list of eco-friendly Halloween ideas. Before you run out to your local costume shop or start to search the web for the perfect Halloween outfit, consider these eco-friendly tips!

Tip numero uno: Use what you already have! We know, we know. This is a piece of environmentally sound advice that seems to keep coming up. But that’s because it is the easiest way to reduce your carbon footprint. Not to mention, the best way to avoid acquiring another piece of fast fashion that will inevitably end up in a landfill, a.k.a. creating more trash. And did we mention it’s great on your wallet, too? Yeah, we thought we should throw that in there. 😉

Tip two: If you must purchase a few items to complete your fabulous Halloween look (hey, not everyone has orange and black striped tights hanging around in the back of their closet), consider swinging by your local thrift or second-hand shop. This again makes an impact on minimizing the negative effects of fast fashion and means that you’re doing your part in re-using and recycling! And again, you’ll likely score a better deal at these local shops than you would at that big box store.

Tip three: Call up your friends and use those neighborhood Facebook groups to swap costumes! So many of us use social media platforms to stay connected to our community and to always know what’s going on around us. Therefore, why not use them to exchange costumes and minimize throwing away old ones you might have laying around that basement storage box of yours? Of course, we recommend ensuring the pieces are washed, clean, and well, givable! Aside from that though, swap away – you environmentally friendly goddess, you.

Decorate to your heart’s content with these eco-friendly tricks.

These are some tricks you’ll actually be down for. No sorcery involved, we swear! What’s more, you can incorporate these eco-friendly tips and options into all of your other holiday décor throughout the year! An easy way to be eco-friendly each year whether it be at Halloween or Christmas is to simply keep the décor that you use instead of throwing it away. This could mean spending a bit more on items that will last longer. You know, instead of buying inexpensive pieces that won’t survive beyond one night of serious trick-or-treating.

Alternatively, if going all out with the outdoor Halloween décor isn’t your jam, that’s cool too. You can opt to spruce up your front porch with (drum roll, please) pumpkins. Alright we know, that isn’t completely ground breaking, but we swear there is always a method to our madness! Here’s the thing, pumpkins are way more environmentally friendly than plastic decorations and you can use *all* of them for a no-waste Halloween project! So the next time you think about ditching them for October 31st décor, consider this.

Throwing a Halloween dinner this year? Check out these eco-friendly ideas to be the hostess with the mostest.

If you’re adding an extra layer to your evening this Halloween (you know, after all of that trick-or-treating and handing out candy), there are tons of ways in which you can do so in an eco-friendly manner. Having a Halloween dinner is a tradition you’ll definitely want to get behind, you’ll see! We have three tips that will make your dinner party on October 31st frighteningly easy for you and your guests, and safe for the planet. Sound too good to be true? Check out these easy peasy tips below.

  1. Ditch disposable plates and cutlery, no matter how cute the Halloween packaging is. We get it, we can be suckers for packaging too. However, we always encourage our babes to host dinner parties the responsible way – with real plates! We know the clean-up post-dinner can be daunting. But babe, you can rest assured that you did something good for the environment!
  2. Pay attention to food waste and invite your guests to go home with leftovers. We preach this one often, too. Not only is food waste just a plain, well, waste. It also contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases as it rots in landfills. I mean, we know it’s Halloween, but that sounds just a little too scary to us.
  3. Encourage your friends to carpool, walk, bike, or use public transportation to get to your place on October 31st! Every little effort counts and hey, a little Halloween night exercise doesn’t hurt either! Plus, what’s not to love about having a designated driver a.k.a. no excuse to not have that All Hallows’ Eve cocktail? #Amirite?
